Insurance SurveyInsurance companies often require vessels to have a “structural” or “out of water survey” at intervals once she has reached a certain age. Generally this is after 20 years of age and then every 5 years, depending on the type of boat. This survey would cover the majority of points looked at in a full condition survey (pre-purchase survey) with the exception of unnecessary description of the accommodation, superficial damage etc. The time spent on board the vessel carrying out the survey is generally virtually the same as for a full survey but there is slightly less to write up in the report so the cost can be a little less than the full survey. The insurance company will generally require any recommendations that are made in the report to be carried out before they will insure the vessel. They seldom require the surveyor to revisit the vessel to check that everything has been carried out, but if the requirements are later found to have not been carried out then the policy might well be void. |
