Damage SurveyIf a vessel has been damaged from an accident then an insurance company will usually require a survey to assess the extent of the damage. A detailed examination of the damaged area will be undertaken and the probable cause of the damage will be decided upon. Recommendations will then be made as to the best course of action to be taken and the best method of repair. The insurance company will also require an estimate of the cost of the repairs. This will generally require liaising with boatyards, the client and the insurance company. The insurance company would expect the accident to be reported immediately and for the damage to be immediately assessed to avoid unnecessary further deterioration of the situation. They would want every effort to be made to salvage gear and to minimize further damage. Machinery and electronics would be expected to be protected from further damage where this was possible. |
